Title: VOIP and TEXT communication in MCO - Idea
Post by: Marco2001 on November 20, 2010, 04:10:16 PM
VOIP and TEXT communication in MCO
( There would be two ways for player to communicate with other player in MCO. By Speeking threw a radia and by sending messages using a computer panel on astronauts left glove )

First of all...I would like to ask if there will be a Voice Communicator implemented in MCO just like in some other games (for instance: Left 4 Dead, Amercias Army and many other)?
I surely hope so!
I know there is Teamspeak or Ventrilo for thatpurposes but that's just not the same...

If there will be a VOIP comm. the game would gain many profits from that (just imagine what).

Ok...back to the topic.
In real life astronauts can communicate to each other by two ways - using VOIP and simply by typing.
Currently in MCO we communicate by typing.
How does it work in real life?

(http://www.google.pl/url?source=imgres&ct=img&q=http://mars.explorative.net/wp-content/uploads/gallery/wip/suit_gl.jpg&sa=X&ei=fQnoTKDFNciVOum-xZoK&ved=0CAQQ8wc4Xw&usg=AFQjCNGucTu0LjXzBoBLB5mVZZp65yEzfA)

Astronaut on his left EVA-suit glove have a computer panel. Here he can acces some interesting data like: external/internal temperature, atmospheric preasure, atmospheric composition, radiation, oxy/power suply, comm.signal strenght etc...
Here he can also acces suits computer to open some simple programs like: distance-to-suply calculator that will show him for how long he can do EVA or even how far away he can go (it calculates the point of no-return).
One of the programs that can be acceses is a message comunicator (just like IRC).
He can use it to chat with other astronauts using it.
This is how we communicate now in MCO.

http://www.google.pl/url?source=imgres&ct=img&q=http://www.tms.org/pubs/journals/JOM/0507/figB.large.gif&sa=X&ei=TAnoTOyVJJCdOpDN8JcK&ved=0CAQQ8wc40wI&usg=AFQjCNFC3U6RG5fBLx0B4vSO_DNBQLhlkw (http://www.google.pl/url?source=imgres&ct=img&q=http://www.tms.org/pubs/journals/JOM/0507/figB.large.gif&sa=X&ei=TAnoTOyVJJCdOpDN8JcK&ved=0CAQQ8wc40wI&usg=AFQjCNFC3U6RG5fBLx0B4vSO_DNBQLhlkw)

Chat using text is used mainly by astronauts when the conditions outside make's it difficoult to speak by VOIP.
(I can see that if VOIP were to be used in MCO, there would surely be situations when the quality of the sound would not be good, and players would like to type instead)

Since astronaut can use this option (Text-message) only by accesing the computer in his left glove I propose that every time a player opens the chat-box ("ENTER" button) avatar would click with his right hand on his left-hand computer.
More than that - when you type a message, avatar would click on his computer aswell.

So...every time player opens the text-chat window on the upper left of the screen with enter button, his avatar would make a move that indicates he is accesing his computer. Every time player types in the text-chat window his avatar taps the computer that indicates he is typing something. When player sends the message, avatar stops accesing the computer and returns to normal.
Basicly - by looking at some other player we see if he types something, becouse he clicks with his right hand on his left-hand computer every time the player is typing something.

Left-hand computer panels seen on the movie "Mission to Mars": (http://images.allmoviephoto.com/2000_Mission_to_Mars/jill_teed_kavan_smith_don_cheadle_peter_outerbridge_mission_to_mars_001.jpg)

(Player could acces that computer by simply clicking enter, and could type to other players, and other players would see that becouse his avatar would be clicking on the screen every time you type a letter)

EDIT: sorry for my mistake's in text. I'am not on my computer.

Very good idea, Marco:) Moreover, there should be possibility to person-to-person chat (typed) comm. Simple, by typing in chat window nickname, colon and message.

Vent or teamspeak is easy to set up and use. In game voice is a large code hit for now so someone fire up a TS server
You have personal chat now using this /tell Hyper hello

Voice communication was implemented in WoW two years ago, but i have never seen anybody using it. Everybody uses Ventrilo or Teamspeak because of the easy setup and configuration.

The main thing I proposed is that whenever player is typing something, avatar is clicking on his left-hand mini computer. So I guess that what I propose is to add an avatar animation of him clicking on a keybord when you type something.

odd thing about PC games is that it seems to me that many games players dont use voice, not sure why.. if compared to xbox live at least anyways..

A speech/orders wheel could be interesting for close range players ie target a player, press i dunno v or something, up pops a orders/speech wheel (with things like, come over here, I need help, can you carry, return to base/rover, I need o2 etc etc) the targeted player gets a nasa sounding sample of an order/speech with the static distortion and the obligitory 'bleep' ant the end.

I play Everquest and we have 24 people in the raids and all 24 on Ventrilo all the time. I dont know how you play a game like that or this without voice. I havent done it here yet, been too busy writing code and designing. Ryder let us use his server for a while there but havent seen him on in a while. If I can get around to it I will look into a dedicated Vent server for us but it's a monthly fee for me and I am already commited to many hours of hard labor.

my wife (Belinda) asked if there was a teamspeak to talk to players as we have been gaming for years and it is great with all the new addons with TS3

as i am a big fan of Teamspeak 3 and would be glad to help the cause out and get a server for Mars Colony online to use if that is Ok

i really think it would enhance the sim alot

Well, I played EVE:Online some time ago, but in team there was only polish. We done almost all corporate things by Vent. My bros are playing WoW, and they are participating in riding parties with sometimes 40-50 peoples and they are not using any voice chat :o

@Pyco if you want to set that up go ahead, I'm sure others will join. I will get something working in the future but for now I am full time teaching at a university, doing this game, playing everquest and taking care of race cars, house, cats and wife so I dont have time to breathe....

What do you teach? Can you get your students to help with testing and programing?

That is a greate idea!
Hyper - if VOIP is impossible to add to MCO than what about using pre-recorded messages?
Then - if I need something I don't have to type it every time.
Several games uses them.
Prerecorded voice messages could be separated into categories:
Navigation
Statemants
Requests
Misc.

I run a small non-profit where most of the work is done by students as internships for academic credit. The reason I asked that is to suggest it may be possible to have students work on the game as part of their class. That way their laziness wouldn't come into play, since they would be graded.

You'd be surprised what some students can do when given the chance to work on something real. Here is our website, built by our Web Design intern:
