Title: Frontier -- First Story
Post by: Mars_In_Ten on January 21, 2016, 11:38:39 AM
My 1st time in Story mode, I missed the notice of crash coordinates, so climbed a few mountains trying to eyeball it, roared down a few valleys, then gave up trying to find it.
Position should have been saved in the PDA

Tried buying food from NPC, and took smpls instead, from which I was able to figure it all out in my base labs with no help from story line. What was curious though -- and a little irritating -- that just as I was completing a step, it would gratuitously give me the information.  I felt like, "Hey, I figured this out on my own.  You diminish my accomplishment (so to speak : >) by giving me story line help I didn't earn, and didn't need".  This giving of unearned and unwanted info was particularly noticeable on a 2nd replay of Story -- of course at that point I knew the solution route ahead of time.
Story dialog is there so you can scan back through
Consider randomly changing as many variables as feasible each time the Story is played.  For instance, on second playing, I noticed password was changed, but not the required mineral element. Don't know if crash coord were changed.
Mineral should be random, crash position is random. It may or may not be the same but it is randomly generated each reset.

Enjoyed the story though.  Look forward to more.  Might want to solicit ideas for other story lines (?).

pretty sure crash coordinates were not in in PDA.  Probably was in upper left hud notice list though if I had scrolled up.

Appreciated having story dialog so could page back thru, but took exception to having info there I hadn't specifically "earned".   This is not the same thing as the concept -- which might make sense -- of eventually giving player additional help or clues if he is not making any progress.

Story runs perfect for me, like to see more or expanded some.

Crow, I agree on looking forward to more stories.  And I'm sure you're right, it would have played fine for me too if I had noticed the satellite coordinates.  But this story could be solved by another approach -- the one I eventually took -- and the programming should be prepared for alternate approaches too.
