Out of Comission for While...
« on: January 29, 2010, 10:08:35 PM »
Yeah so... the first time I let somebody use my computer when i wasn't there ... they downloaded a Trojan. My computer is currently being bounced around by four companies each trying to blame each other. Well I will probably have my computer back in a week or two, but this was just a heads up as to my lack of participation.

I hate viruses.. I kill them for cast but.. They are bad things lately.. I have removed several that necessitated a repair of the windows operating system with the original install disks.

A couple more are just too smart for the virus scanners and I cant track them down... I have to format... as even in a pre-installation environment the virus does not show up on any scanner I can find.

In the war of viruses vs anti virus programs the viruses are winning...
badly

Ive been using, BullGuard v8.7 Gamer edition- came free with the PC I bought, been solid for ridding/detecting viruses and trojans etc, without slowing PC down. Recommended

It has an abysmal detection rate if i recall correctly... * looks it up* It did so poorly on common viruses they didn't even bother including it *along with a ton of other anti virus products* in the final report.

(Virus scanners have to find 97% of old common (Set A) viruses before they will bother doing a set B test of the newer ones. If it couldn't keep up with viruses 12 months old, then its basically like wearing a wire mesh suit in a lake of acid... Just not gonna help much.)

This report really is over generous too, most viruses are a few days old now.. not months..
Some viruses are updated more often than anti-virus software is...

Yes, that maybe true- but what also helps is what you do or dont download, where or where not you look on the internet and what and what you dont open in your emails!
I actually received the 'From the department of Nigerian Goverments banking' email, asking me to send my bank details, so they could transfer the entire nigerian buget over to My account for 24 hours while there goverment was in turmoil over some policitcal coo.. If your gonna fall for that sort of scam then you deserve a virus or too lol

Again somebody else was using my computer while I was away -_- ... I thought they just shutdown the computer if something went wrong, not get fooled by the " Your computer is infected download this".

That's a reinstall.
Possibly wiped the windows directory.. the program files and some user files will remain intact with such a install.

A reformat is usually not necessary but will clean every file on the drive off.
