Here's an idea. Perhaps place some sort of application on the forum that is directly connected to the server. It'll detail whether it's on or offline, the current number of players that have joined, and possibly the average ping/latency of the server.
Be easy for players to simply check the forum before going on to the server, so they'd know in advance whether they were alone or not.
