Plant and Bio Proccessor.
« on: April 11, 2011, 05:08:38 PM »
I hate to suggest changing anything when they work so well, but...

Many a times I have heard that we would be using advanced but reliable technology that was able to be repaired in the field, and could be manufactured in-situe with available materials and industry.

There seem to be two exceptions to this.  The plant and bio processor.   They seem distinctly too advanced and complicated for a martian mission.   It is all ascetic of course but maybe if their art assets were swapped to a table with a bunch of knives and a rinse basin,  and maybe another table with a hand crank meat grinder and knives it would be more in place with the vision as described.

Even our magic alchemy table is distinctly less technological looking.

I have, and I have taken care of modern equipment as well...

Modern farm equipment requires specialized extremely narrow tolerance parts, high density electronics, and they use specialized highly pure alloys in its construction.  All three of those fabrication process require the super low tolerances available by computer aided manufacturing, and the scaled economy of a developed planet. (Earth at the moment)  I just am conjecturing it may not be possible to create replacement parts for farm equipment on mars that meets the tolerances in something like that.

It is just aesthetic of course and means nothing to game play, but that was my view on it.

But yeah even if it was never changed no real harm would be done.  It's just a picture.

@profit, its a perfectally valid point.

saying that, I am happy in game to have a 'magic box' that completes a task at a 'press of a button' the fact that we have this amazing working simulation in My mind overlooks the issues of some of the equipment would probally be very difficult to actually work with todays tech.... (see 'using future tech card')

LOL yeah, I am happy with the magic box as well, and I would not want any changes to how things currently work, just thought maybe a different art asset.... I am sure our characters can figure out what seeds and food are so the actual interface wouldn't change... =)

I had thing a little about this. And Profit is right, processing plant in so small garden using advanced machinery is not in place. What is more, beens, zucchini and potatos should be processed very differently - beens' seeds are inside of pods and are eatable, zucchinis' seeds are inside of fruits (berries exactly), and can be eaten too (but sometimes they are removed and trashed), potato... there is it:D Normally, we don't plant if from seeds, but from bulbs. Yeap, same we eat. Well, we can allow potato plants' to live to death (until become sear), pick up small berries and extract seeds, but we are in risk that bulbs will start to decay. This is why on Earth we are planting potatos from bulbs, not from seeds. So, what size of machine will be able to do so different jobs with so different plants? We need just a table and one knife. About dialog box, should stay as it is, but after I should have in inventory: bag of fruits, pods or bulbs and one piece of waste. Furthermore, I should be able to extract seeds from beens' pods or zucchinis' fruits after that, but extracting seeds from pods live me without food.
RESISTANCE IS FUTILE

@Mech, Yes you also make an equally valid point, and I expect as the sim gets close to completion the finer detials such as yourself stated will be seen too.. again, what we must remeber is that the Mars sim is many different sims in one, the farming routine for example is a working plant growing simulation (the process in itself is very complex) the fact that it works is a amazing feat of coding in My mind... great suggestions but as long as the base core of each part works that will do for me,... the sim will grow but one step at a time.. IMHO.
