Uncommon ways to die in MarsColony
« on: June 29, 2011, 10:29:35 AM »
In my opinion, in such sophisticated colony-simulator there should be lots of "things" you could do wrong that should kill you (and your friends).
Setting aside the basic things like: radiation-poisoning, femine, dehydration, lack of oxygen, CO2 poisoning, depreasurization, cold, etc I made a list of some certain things that may kill you If you are a "noob on Mars"  ;)

Kill-button -->We have one in base called "Open both airlock doors". There could be also a button that seals-off and fills the module with toxic halon-gas for fire extinction, or a button that disables air-ventilation in this module to save energy (without constant air-circulation toxic gases are stocking there).

Drilling accident - One of the worst kinds of accidents that could happen on Mars is when you drill, and suddenly the super-preasurized material vents into low-preasure martian air which resoults in an rapid explosion. Everyone standing near the drill point gets thei'r eva-suit torn apart and instantly killed. Such disasters have been foreseen by NASA experts in a movie they made, called "Flight to Mars". In this movie, astronauts find a crater which is the remnant of a frozen lake. They drill during the night, and suddenly - they Find water! This ice starts to melt becouse of the vacuum and evaporates, quicker and quicker. It start's "snowing" near the drill-site untill the water evaporation is so greate that it just BURST out of the drill. The drill get's torn to pieces, and those pieces fly everywhere...one of which pierces a japanese astrobiologist eva-helmet.

Air-Filter failure - Another thing that can kill is an dirty air-filter. In space, such filters gets rapidly attacked by microscopic Fungi. If that filter is not deinstalled, it will spread the spores all around the base, and everyone that breathes the HUB air will get slowly more and more sick, untill they die from respiratory disease.

HUB computer wrong readings failure - One of the biggest threats for an astronaut is a computer that is showing wrong readings. Essentially - You won't know what's killing you...Space computers are build as simple as possible, to avoid any kind of errors, but certain components may be broken becouse of the long exposure to the radiation. It may happen that the readings on the HUB-s computer that are "NORMAL" are outdated and in reality, you should all take-care. In the movie "Flight to mars" they had a similar problem, in which one of the thousands parts was showing nominal air-mix, but in reality, they had way to much CO2 in the air...and they slowly choaked day by day.

Regolit Pits - A proposed by Ben Bova danger on Mars (the autor of the novel "Mars") are so-called "regolit pits". Mars uniqe geology and weather fills craters with microscopic-dust over houndrets of years. In the end, the deep crater get's completelly flat with this tiny dust. This is a greate danger to any rover passing by. Anything that drives threw this flat terrains gets instanlty burried under the dust. ----> http://hyperkat.com/litterbox/index.php?topic=317.msg2451#msg2451

No excersize - Whether it's LEO, space or Mars, humans needs 1g to have thei'r optimal health. If the gravity is lowered, they will need to use a special equipement that will induce the training of musscles normally not used. If not used for a long time, astronauts body will get less and less health and stamina. Essentially, after a while, you will get so weak, that you won't be able to work properly, and even the smallest thing can kill you.

Dust Devil discharge - Inside the martian dust devils there is a constant static discharge (possibly in a form of a lightning). Enything that passes the dust devils path gets fried. If an astronaut gets close enough, his EVA suit electronics would stop working, and batteries would explode or get completely discharged. This essentially means death to the astronaut, and repairing every equipement that was near it.

Static Discharge wound - Since martian air has practicly no air humidity, static charges are tend to gather on metalic parts. This is especcialy the case when the item was left outside for a while unatended. When an astronaut tries to touch the equipement, the big-charge that was on it will be released, and not only the astronaut will be wounded, but also there is a chance that the equipements electronics will be totaly fried.

O2 explosion - The most dangerous material on Mars isn't the methane on the hydrogen. It's the Oxygen. Since martian air has practicly none of it, when you release it to the air it will automaticly burst into flames while reacting to the reduced compounds of the air. If the canister we are holding is somehow dammaged, it's possible it will explode. The same goes with the main oxy-tank. If it leaks oxygen, you must be prepared that it might explode in the base.

Landlsides - As on Earth, hills and mountains have material's on them that periodicly slides-down (can be induced by human present too). I propose that if someone climbs on a hill that has certain degree, he will induce a landslide on the mountain, which will essentially be a cloud of dust that slides down slowly (lesses gravitation) and dammages everything on its paths for every second standing in it.

this is so typical.....marco-why do you always deal with catastrophies??? ;)

but your right.....some good things there.

I like the idea of disasters, not too many and not complete sim killers. But something that causes an emergency situation that requires action to add a bit of tension in game.

i bet there will be some specials like those catastrophies. its just the question, if its playable -that means you can handle this without ruining the complete simulation.
do we want a _game over_     szenario?     Iguess marco likes a nuclear explosion because of a generator fault that blows up everything.....

A series of events caused by the users = catastrophic failure I'll buy that. Most generally I like to keep it salvagable and more points for solving the puzzle.

Her's an easy kill-button  ;)
In MCCS at start doors of the module are connected with not other modules but they lead to the outside. When you try to open them you get "This door is sealed-off" (or something like that). What if...the the doors had a safety-lock on them, and by pressing the button you would be asked "Do you want to remove the seal from this doors?"  If someone clicks YES the seals will be removed, and anyone will be able to simply open it by clicking on the button...which will depreasurize the module (and propably the rest of the base too).
On one hand - it gives you a warning.
On the other hand - a noob will die from it.

Uncomon ways to die in MCO? ...well Mr.Mann has to take the cake for this one...on more than one occasion ive seen him simply remove his helmet so he wouldn't have to walk back to base...*shakes head* maybe he needs a mental evaluation...hes constantly committing suicide in mars...in front of me!! can i duct tape him to a chair like in the movie Armageddon?

 :D   Muhahaha.....     nice one.

i really would add that to the sim, just to see his face then....
