Steam Greenlight
« on: March 18, 2013, 03:38:48 PM »
Hi all. The game got posted on Steam Greenlight Sunday evening. Go there and put in some votes and a few nice comments would be appreciated.
Thanks all for your time and effort helping this project get to this point. If I can sell it and make a few $$ for the time I spent doing it I will start plans for version 2. You all have helped me alot and you have steered the direction of the game with your comments.
Thanks again

I'm fairly new to MC:C, I first learned about it on Steam Greenlight. It got my up vote.
Boldly going forward, 'cause I can't find reverse.

@ Hyper
I was poking around the Steam Greenlight page for MC:C earlier.

Two things I would like to bring up.
First, the MC:C video shown on Steam Greenlight has no audio. I double checked YouTube, no audio for it there either.

Second, it might help to post a new announcement or otherwise update the description about MC:C on Steam Greenlight, since at first glance it looks like the last update posted there was in April.
Some people don't bother with the simple task of checking previous pages of comments (or checking comments in general) before they comment. There is actually an 'is it dead?' comment just two posts after your last comment there.

If it is possible (and allowable by whatever terms are needed for using Steam Greenlight), maybe tossing in a link there to the HyperKat Games main page, along with indicating people can find an MC:C demo there.
It could also help get some extra interests in some of your other projects.

Getting some extra interested people over there directed to where they can find the demo and buy the game could also help drum up extra support on Steam Greenlight.
Boldly going forward, 'cause I can't find reverse.

One thing that I have been thinking about.

Could the fact most of the forum is 'private' be possibly driving away/scaring off those people who might first want to 'lurk around' or otherwise read other user comments before making a commitment to the game?
Like if they do an online search, and get pointed to a screen that basically says the page does not exist or is private.

I know I was initially put off by the forum appearing to just be a few boards that only contained staff comments/posts. I like to make informed decisions before I even register on a forum.

Isn't it possible to make the whole board publicly viewable, yet still require a login to post?

You seriously should consider posting new updates/announcements on the Steam Greenlight page.
Some people apparently cannot be bothered to look for Author comments, or read comments in general.  Someone actually asked 'is it dead?' just two comments/1 day after your last comment on the Steam Greenlight page for MC:C.
Others are commenting on the lack of a link to the MC:C/Hyperkat Games website.
Boldly going forward, 'cause I can't find reverse.

I completely agree with this. I heard about this Game probably a Month ago, but didn't try the Demo or do much Research of it, but it was on my "to to list" I only just got the Demo 4 days ago, and tried checking out these Forums to see what everyones oppinion of the Game would be, and was only greeted by a few topics with only the DEV's post in them. My initial thought was that this Game has either flopped, or the Gameplay just didn't live up to it's expectation.

Even after I did some more Research into the Game, I was still skeptical of purchasing it. There is not much on Youtube, and I didn't come across any Reviews ect ect for it. Only after I finally found a decent Let's Play [first 2 Phases] did I get a feel of what the Gameplay is like, and how the Lets Player was enjoying himself in it. That gave me the motivation to install the Demo and check it out for myself, and I did definitely enjoy it, although it was still in the back of my head of "how long this Game would stay in Development."

My Registration to the Forums was accepted after a few days, and I saw pages and pages of posts, and all positive [from what I read so far], which was definitely a relief. This is what gave me the push to purchase the Game, and would like to add that you have done a Fantastic Job!!!

In all honesty though the Graphics for this Game do lack, but the Gameplay makes up for it incredibly, but even though me, and probably most of the people who have purchased this Game don't care for Graphics, the majority of Gamers nowadays use that as a first impression, and if they can't hear what everyone else is saying, then they will most likely buy something else instead.

Point being, this is very off putting to people who tend to do Research into Games before purchasing. Although Steam will bring in some new Customers, I think at the end of the day, having these Forums more open to anyone interested will definitely help in the long run.

The reason this is mostly private was for the testers. I have had a lot of issues with porn spammers here so I restricted access. I will try to change things some.
Thanks...

I have seen other forums utilize assorted options to deal with spam bots.

Is there a problem with allowing the forum to be publicly viewed, but still require registration to actually post?
I forget, but doesn't this forum already utilize a question and one of those 'enter the distorted letters/numbers from the random image' things for registering a new account?

I have also seen something called Spam-O-Matic on another forum I go to, it is a 'spam firewall' that shares a main database of known/suspected spammers.
It utilizes the following site.
http://stopforumspam.com/
It also looks like there is a mod/plugin for the Simple Machines based forums to use the database.
http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1547

Would that be useful in helping to limit or otherwise stop spam bots/spammers in general from registering on this forum?

I just registered on this forum today. But when I heard about this game, I instantly went to the homepage. As a Webdesigner, my first thought was "ooh, this homepage looks really bad". Designed with tables, some buttons and New Times Roman font. I used to see such pages like 10 years ago ;)

But ok, I thought maybe the developer just didnt had any time to make a better site yet. So my next step was to look into the forum to see how many people are playing this game. And then I just saw some postings from the developer, but no replies or any other postings. So my first impression was, that this game is dead.

Then I downloaded the demo and had a lot of fun with it. But when I got the the "buy the game" page, it was 24€. After watching the bad homepage and the empty forum, and a price of 24€, I was not really convinced. And I think thats not only my impression. But I'm pretty sure that will change after it got greenlightes on steam. There they got their own forum and buying options.

But you really have to work on the homepage and forum! ;)

Hm not sure. But noone is using new times roman anymore, its just the ugly standard font. I personally like just Arial or Helvetica. But we also use calibri sometimes.
But I'm more of a web-programmer and not a designer ;) But I would also put more media on the page. More screenshots, maybe videos and so on.

Did you use a program to make the side, or did you do that by your own with a text editor?

We should post a poll and see what people think. I have shut down production on the next version of the game till we can get this resolved so any input would be good.

Tossing in my 2 cents.
I can agree that the site could use a little improvement, although I know basically know nothing about webpage design, a few basic things pop into mind based on things I have seen on other sites.
One thing that comes to mind would be something other than a plain background.
Maybe something like a background image of Mars terrain (from actual images or from in game) for the MC:C portion of the site. Or perhaps a 'mission control' (or "Mars base command center) sort of scene for the background of the MC:C Scores page.

For fonts, I prefer Arial myself, at least it looks better to me than Times New Roman in Wordpad and OpenOffice.
