new to the game but love it
« on: January 04, 2015, 09:57:34 AM »
First up I want to say I love this game it seems very under rated which is a shame this game has sooooo much potential and can't wait to see where it goes. One thing I would love too see it simple click n join servers for the technical inept like me lol

How do you mean simple click and join ? Join other server or join local game server?
New version will be better...
Thanks for the input

I think he means a server list, rather than only having IP connect like version 1. It's not like this is the first game to require a little effort on the host's part, but I did notice an inordinate amount of people claiming difficulty in running and connecting to servers.
I always liked deadlines...I love the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.

Ah, didn't know that.
One of the programmers is working on a master server listing code. As we get farther in there should be a web page at HyperKat to show online servers, player counts etc.
In game you will be able to do a server query and get a list to choose from.

Most connection issues stem from people not understanding port forwarding on their routers and thats a hand holding exercise that I have tried to overcome but people will not read and most dont understand.
I have tried to auto set routers but that is a security issue I would rather not open to the hackers.

Basic networking knowledge seems to be a dying art, these days. It's not like it can get much easier; I mean configuring your average router doesn't mean an hour or two tearing your closet apart wondering where you put that console cable this time.

Definitely stay away from having the game touch routers. Besides poor security practice it's a good way to get your application flagged by AV. You don't want to have to deal with countless players asking why the game is being flagged as malware.

An in game server query should go a long way. That means players can easily find a server and hosts don't need to advertise in the forum.

The port forwarding issue is so simple to do. People can't connect or set a server up for others to connect and the timeout gets blamed on the game. Gets a bit tiring dealing with it. When this game releases everyone can set up a dedicated server and have mini games with their friends but back to the forwarding issue. I wont work unless you set the ports. Most have no clue they can just log into their router and set it in 15 seconds so I get blamed for not making it simpler. 192.168.1.1 is your best friend if you are any kind of gamer.
Not sure what to do.
We are going to set up a master server system and make the IP addresses blind to the users to prevent hacks but still the master has to set ports.

I think the issue is that the common practice currently is to provide a dedicated host. If you are doing that, you generally know to port forward. The small number of players that joined together in version 1 made dedicated hosting silly, and players became frustrated because this was not the norm they were used to. Having a game that doesn't "just work" is anathema to the app generation.

I'd apologize for the failings of my generation if it would make any difference.  :-[
